(Fredericton) – The Cities of New Brunswick Associated today released an updated white paper calling on all Provincial election candidates to commit to strengthening New Brunswick’s cities through municipal government reform.

The white paper was originally published in 2019 as part of the ongoing education and awareness campaign by the Cities of NB Association to educate elected officials, opinion leaders and New Brunswickers about the issues currently impacting New Brunswick’s cities and the benefits that could be derived by all New Brunswickers if these issues were addressed.

The white paper has been updated to reflect the current environment, updates on particular issues and new and emerging priorities that will help to ensure a thriving and prosperous New Brunswick moving forward.

“With just 2 weeks until the New Brunswick Provincial election, we are calling on all parties and all candidates to read the updated white paper and commitment to implementing its recommendations,” says Cities of NB Chair Adam Lordon.

“We are calling on all candidates to acknowledge the role our cities play in driving economic growth and sustainability for the entire province,” says Lordon. “We are asking all candidates to commit to implementing key changes to municipal governance, property taxation and the necessary supporting legislation that will give cities the ability to participate in decision-making that directly affects their costs, growth opportunities and residential tax rates.”

The recommended changes include;
  1. Municipal governance restructuring (including a fair property tax system)
  2. Increased municipal infrastructure investment
  3. A change to provincial arbitration legislation (police and fire) to consider affordability
  4. The ability of our cities to generate non-tax derived revenue

“The 8 cities of New Brunswick have become the economic engine of this province and, as such, we need to ensure their long-term sustainability,” says Lordon.  “By doing so we will ensure that all New Brunswickers benefit from continued economic growth and prosperity for all regions of New Brunswick.”
