Miramichi
The City of Miramichi was formed on January 1, 1995 through an Order-in-Council to amalgamate the former towns of Chatham and Newcastle, villages of Douglastown, Loggieville and Nelson-Miramichi, and several local service districts. The population of Miramichi is 17, 811 (Statistics Canada-2011 Census). The City's labour force is comprised of retail (15%), manufacturing (14%), health services (13%), government (9%) and education (8%).
Recently, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business ranked Miramichi as the top municipality in New Brunswick in their Canada’s Top Entrepreneurial Cities report and Miramichi ranked 1st in the country in this same report in the Life Satisfaction category (CFIB, October 2012). Miramichi was also designated as the World's first Smart Technologies Showcase Community in 2010. |
The Miramichi River is known around the world for its salmon fishing. The rich and famous have cast a line along its shores to hook the mighty Atlantic salmon. The city promotes itself as a four season tourism destination by focusing on its cultural and historical attractions, outdoor adventure activities, numerous summer festivals and hospitality.
